‘Cité de la Philanthropie / Stad van Menslievendheid’ is an ongoing research into the historical and current developments of social housing production of Brussels, which resulted in 2021 in a book. In the Open Studios of the Jan van Eyck Academy, the book was released within an exhibition, supported by shelves structures as scale models of one of the investigated renovation projects near Rue Haute and Rue de la Philanthropie in Brussels.
Through readings, maps, photography and conversations with residents, this project urges to search for new social ideologies connected to the production and renovation strategies of public housing. Can we prevent a repetition of social mutation and displacement, by learning from, and surpassing radical modernist urban planning strategies?
