Within the Bouwmeesterlabel 038, meow collective, Oleg Asoiev, and Sophia Holst examine how places "in limbo"—temporarily neglected, unplanned urban residual spaces—can be transformed into valuable testing grounds that serve the public interest and enrich future urban plans. Such sites are informally appropriated by nature, residents, and local initiatives, yet risk being lost once construction projects begin.
Together they are creating a "recipe book" that compiles strategies to preserve the qualities of these sites and integrate them into future plans. By analyzing successful examples, initiating a wide range of conversations, and testing a temporary architectural intervention in the Pechère Gardens at the RAC site in Brussels, they aim to reveal existing qualities and complexities next to socio-spatial potentials of these locations. The resulting recipe book aims to inspire designers, policymakers, and citizens to view these sites not merely as residual spaces, but as catalysts for inclusive urban development.
